Stop Internal Keyword Competition

By Justin | Jun 11, 2008

Many bloggers write multiple posts targeting the same general keyword phrase. The problem is that Google will only show TWO results from your site for a given keyword. (usually, but they will show more in some cases). How do you control which sites show up?

The problem is that Google has to determine which document on your site is the most authoritative for a given keyword. If you mention the keyword in multiple posts, this presents Google with a problem. It has to determine the most appropriate page and may pick one that you don’t want to be the one ranking.

This is really easy to fix. All you need to do is build the desired page’s internal keyword authority. Just like you can build authority by bringing in external links, you can also mold your internal authority. To set internal keyword authority, just do these three simple steps.

1) Highly Optimized On Site SEO

The desired page needs to be the most optimized for the keyword. You’ll want to optimize the one page better than the others. This means keywords in the title, url, headings, bold, alt, and content. Put the keyword near the top and again near the end. This will help convince Google that this page is the most appropriate for the keyword.

2) Internal Link Authority

This is the big one. Find every other page that mentions this keyword on your site. Open them up and find the keyword. Link the keyword once in every post to the post you want to rank. Internal PR works just like external linking. Each page on your site now cites your desired page at THE page for that keyword. This also improves internal deep linking, which is very important.

3) Build External Authority

When building links, try to only anchor the desired page with the desired keywords. Anchoring another page with the same keywords may confuse Google. If both sites are linked to using the same keywords, Google isn’t sure which is the most appropriate to display for a search for those keywords. Only anchor the keywords to the one page you want to rank.

Internal SEO linking is an important SEO practice every blogger should learn. Molding internal ranking gives an SEO some control over how Google ranks the pages on their site. If you’ve developed a landing page for a specific keyword, it is important that Google ranks your landing page instead some post on your blog about the same topic. You’re able to “pick” which page shows for a search term by making it’s keyword authority higher than the other pages on your site that also mention the keyword. A simple guide, but a practice many bloggers forget.
